Introduction: What You’ll Learn
In this simulation, you’ll practice dealing with situations where a team member feels excluded from casual team interactions. The focus is on fostering inclusion by recognizing subtle exclusion and addressing it constructively.
You’ll practice:
- Observing team dynamics and identifying exclusion
- Initiating inclusive conversations naturally
- Encouraging open dialogue and participation
- Fostering a supportive and welcoming team environment
Step-by-Step Simulation
Scene 1: Observing the Team Environment
(You notice during lunch breaks and casual chats, one teammate, Jamie, often sits quietly and seems disengaged from the conversation.)
Facilitator: (Internal Thought) "I’ve noticed Jamie seems a bit on the outside during our team chats. I should find a way to bring them into the conversation."
Facilitator: "Hey team, how about we grab some coffee together in the break room? Jamie, want to join us?"
Scene 2: Initiating Conversation
(In the break room, the conversation naturally drifts towards a shared hobby that Jamie isn’t involved in.)
Facilitator: "Hey Jamie, I remember you mentioned you enjoy hiking. Found any good trails lately?"
Jamie: "Yeah, actually! I checked out a new trail last weekend. It was really beautiful."
Facilitator: "That sounds awesome! I’ve been looking for new places to explore. How about a team hike soon? What do you all think?"
(The team shows interest, and the conversation shifts to planning a group outing.)
Scene 3: Encouraging Open Dialogue
(Later, you approach Jamie one-on-one to ensure they feel included.)
Facilitator: "Hey Jamie, I just wanted to check in. Sometimes our conversations can get a bit focused on specific topics. Are you feeling included in the team?"
Jamie: "Thanks for asking. It’s been a bit hard to jump into the conversations sometimes."
Facilitator: "I appreciate you sharing that. I want everyone to feel like part of the team. If there’s anything you’d like to talk about or suggest, feel free to bring it up. Your perspective is really valuable."
Scene 4: Fostering a Supportive Environment
Facilitator: (To the team during a meeting) "Before we wrap up, let’s make an effort to include all voices in our conversations. Everyone should feel welcome to share."
Facilitator: "Thanks for being such a great team. Let’s keep working on making sure everyone feels included."
Mini Roleplay Challenges
Challenge 1: A team member frequently dominates the conversation. What do you do?
- Best Response: “Thanks for your input. I’d love to hear what Jamie thinks about this too.”
Challenge 2: Jamie seems hesitant to join an activity. What do you do?
- Best Response: “No pressure at all, but it’d be great to have you join. Let us know if you’re interested.”
Challenge 3: The team unintentionally brings up an inside joke. How do you handle it?
- Best Response: “Inside joke alert! Let’s fill in the gaps for everyone who wasn’t there.”
Optional Curveball Mode
- Jamie brings up a past exclusion incident.
- A team member doesn’t see the issue as a problem.

Practice addressing each scenario with sensitivity and focus on inclusion.
