Aligning Priorities with Stakeholders and Product Management

Stakeholder & Product Management AlignmentMid5–10 min

Introduction: What You’ll Learn

Misaligned priorities between engineering and product management can lead to confusion and inefficiencies. This simulation will help you identify these misalignments and guide a productive conversation to realign objectives.

You’ll practice:

  • Spotting signs of misalignment
  • Facilitating a dialogue between stakeholders
  • Proposing solutions to align priorities
  • Maintaining a collaborative and focused tone

Step-by-Step Simulation

Scene 1: Recognizing Misalignment

Facilitator: "Hi team, it looks like we might have some differences between our engineering roadmap and the product management priorities. Let’s review our objectives to make sure we’re all on the same page."

Facilitator (as a developer): "I noticed we’re focusing on developing feature X this sprint, but product management seems to be prioritizing feature Y. Can we clarify this?"

Facilitator: "Thanks for pointing that out. Let’s get some input from everyone."

Scene 2: Gathering Input

Priya (Product Manager): "We’re pushing for feature Y because it’s a key part of our upcoming marketing campaign and important for hitting next quarter’s sales goals."

Alex (Developer): "I hear that, but feature X addresses some critical performance issues that could affect customer satisfaction if we delay them."

Facilitator: "Both of these are important. Let’s talk about how we can find a balance."

Scene 3: Proposing Solutions

Facilitator: "Here’s a thought: Can we split our resources to make progress on both features? Maybe focus on the most critical parts first."

Sara (UX Designer): "We could design components that both features need, which might save us some time."

Facilitator: "Priya, do you think there’s any wiggle room with the marketing timeline if we need to adjust our rollout a bit?"

Priya: "I’ll check with the marketing team to see if we have any flexibility."

Scene 4: Reaching Agreement

Facilitator: "Here’s what we’re thinking:"

  • Parallelize efforts on features X and Y: We’ll allocate resources to ensure both move forward.
  • Design reusable components: This should help us speed things up.
  • Explore marketing timeline flexibility: Priya will discuss adjustments with the marketing team.

Facilitator: "I’ll put this plan together and share it for feedback. Let’s meet again tomorrow to finalize any changes. Thanks, everyone, for your input and teamwork."

Mini Roleplay Challenges

Challenge 1: A team member insists on prioritizing technical debt.

  • Best Response: "I get why that’s important. Let’s see if we can address key tech debt while still hitting our product goals."

Challenge 2: A stakeholder doesn’t acknowledge engineering’s resource concerns.

  • Best Response: "Let’s look at our capacity to make sure we’re setting realistic and achievable goals."

Challenge 3: The meeting gets a bit tense.

  • Best Response: "Let’s take a breath and remember our shared goals. We’re here to find a solution that works for everyone."

Optional Curveball Mode

  • A key stakeholder can’t attend the meeting.
  • New data changes product priorities during the discussion.
  • A team member mentions an unexpected technical challenge.

Practice keeping the meeting focused and adaptable while addressing these situations.
