Performance Conversations: Holding Someone Accountable

Performance ConversationsMid5–10 min

Introduction: What You’ll Learn

This simulation guides you through a performance conversation focused on accountability. It involves ensuring a team member follows through on previously agreed improvements. You'll learn to navigate this dialogue constructively, reinforcing commitment while maintaining a supportive atmosphere.

You’ll practice:

  • Discussing past agreements and current progress
  • Encouraging self-reflection and taking ownership
  • Setting clear next steps and offering support
  • Keeping the conversation positive and empathetic

Step-by-Step Simulation

Scene 1: Setting the Stage

Facilitator: "Hey Jamie, thanks for making time to chat today. I wanted to check in on our previous discussion about improving consistency with your code reviews and meeting deadlines. How have things been going on your end?"

Jamie: "Hey, no problem. I've been trying to keep up with the goals we set."

Facilitator: "That's great to hear. Let's dive into the specifics. How do you feel you've done with sticking to the code review timelines?"

Scene 2: Discussing Progress and Challenges

Jamie: "I’ve been more consistent, but there were a couple of times I missed the deadline because of unexpected tasks."

Facilitator: "Thanks for being upfront about that. Can you tell me more about what came up and how it affected your schedule?"

Jamie: "There was an urgent bug fix and a last-minute request from the product team. I tried my best to juggle everything, but it got a bit overwhelming."

Facilitator: "Sounds like you had a lot on your plate. Let's think about how we can handle these surprises better in the future."

Scene 3: Encouraging Reflection and Ownership

Facilitator: "Looking back, is there anything you think could help manage those unexpected tasks while still meeting your code review deadlines?"

Jamie: "Maybe building in more buffer time for urgent tasks or giving a heads-up if I'm running behind could help."

Facilitator: "Those sound like solid strategies. How about we set aside some buffer time and make sure to communicate early if things start to slip? Does that work for you?"

Scene 4: Setting Clear Next Steps

Facilitator: "Alright, let's outline what we'll do next: We'll add buffer times to your schedule and keep the lines open for early updates if deadlines are at risk. Would regular check-ins help, or is there another way you'd prefer to stay on track?"

Jamie: "Yeah, regular check-ins would be great, just to make sure I'm not missing anything."

Facilitator: "Perfect, we can do a weekly check-in. I'll also make sure you have the resources you need. Let's see how this works over the next month and then review. Sound good?"

Jamie: "Definitely, that sounds like a plan. Thanks for the support."

Facilitator: "Of course, Jamie. I'm here to help you succeed. Let's keep communicating and adjust as needed."

Mini Roleplay Challenges

Challenge 1: Jamie gets defensive about the missed deadlines.

  • Best Response: “I get that things can get busy. Let's focus on finding a way forward together.”

Challenge 2: Jamie doesn't see any issues.

  • Best Response: “I hear you — let’s look at a couple of examples where things got tricky.”

Challenge 3: Jamie suggests ideas that seem unrealistic.

  • Best Response: “Those are interesting — let's refine them into something we can act on.”

Optional Curveball Mode

Add one of these scenarios during practice:

  • Jamie seems distracted and not engaged.
  • Jamie shifts blame onto other team members.
